Linn County Sheriff Bruce Riley wants to remind everyone that as summer draws to a close, back-to-school season is in full effect. Whether children walk, ride their bicycle or skateboard or take the bus to school, it is extremely important that we all take proper safety precautions. As motorists, it’s never more important to slow down, pay close attention and safely share the roads with school buses, pedestrians and bicyclists. It is also important, as mentors, to provide children with the necessary knowledge to stay safe while commuting to and from school.
Walking to and from school –
- Walk on the sidewalk, if one is available. If no sidewalk is available, always walk facing traffic.
- Use crosswalks when available.
- Before crossing the street, stop and look left, right and then left again before proceeding.
Riding a bicycle or skateboard to and from school –
- Always wear a helmet and make sure it is fitted and properly secured.
- Ride with traffic and in a single file line if there is more than one person.
- Come to a complete stop before crossing the street and walk your bicycle or carry your skateboard across.
Riding the bus to and from school –
- Arrive at the designated bus stop at least 10 minutes before the bus is due.
- Stand a minimum of 6’ from the curb.
- Wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before boarding.
- If crossing the street in front of the bus is required, eye contact between the student and the bus driver should be made and the bus driver should indicate when it is safe to cross.
Keeping our children safe is top priority. By exercising additional care and caution as the new school year approaches, drivers and students can safely co-exist on our roads and in school zones.
